How to Eat Out, Travel and Still Get Results After 40

One of the biggest reasons men over 40 give up on getting in shape is that they think it means giving up their life. No more dinners out, no more pints with mates, no more enjoying a holiday. Diet as punishment. And fair enough, nobody wants to live like that, so they don’t bother starting.

Here’s the truth I want every man to hear: you can eat out, travel, socialise and still get real results. You just need a few simple habits that keep you on track without turning you into the miserable bloke ordering dry chicken while everyone else enjoys themselves.

Aim for good enough, consistently

Perfection is the enemy here. You don’t need every meal to be flawless. You need most of them to be reasonable. If eighty percent of your meals across a week support your goal, the odd big dinner or few drinks won’t derail anything. Progress is built on the average, not on any single meal. Once you understand that, the pressure lifts and it all becomes sustainable.

Restaurants are easier than you think

Eating out is not the problem men imagine. Most menus have something that fits if you know what to look for. A few simple moves:

  • Anchor the meal on protein: steak, chicken, fish, whatever you fancy.
  • Load up on the vegetables or salad that come with it.
  • Be a bit mindful of the extras, the bread basket, the mountain of chips, the third drink.
  • Have the dessert if it’s a special occasion. Just not every single time.

You can walk into almost any restaurant and eat well without making it weird or announcing your diet to the table. It’s ordering with a bit of intent, that’s all.

Drinks are where it quietly goes wrong

If there’s one thing that sabotages men over 40, it’s liquid calories. A few pints, a bottle of wine over dinner, the sugary coffees through the day. They add up fast, they don’t fill you up, and the drinking often leads to the late-night picking. You don’t have to go teetotal. But being honest about alcohol, and keeping it for occasions rather than most nights, changes results dramatically. This is often the single biggest lever for men who feel stuck.

Travel doesn’t have to break the streak

Work trips and holidays throw men off because their whole routine disappears. The fix is to lower the bar, not abandon it. You might not train the way you do at home, but a hotel-room session with a few movements keeps the habit ticking. Protein is available everywhere if you look. And walking to explore a new place is training in disguise. Come back having held your ground instead of undone a month, and you’re winning.

Have a plan for the blow-outs

You will overdo it sometimes. Big weekend, celebration, holiday. That’s life, and it’s fine. What matters is what you do next. The men who stay in shape don’t avoid every indulgence. They just get straight back to normal the very next meal, without the guilt spiral or the “well, I’ve ruined it now” week. One big meal is a blip. It’s the week you write off afterwards that does the damage.

This is how I coach nutrition

I have zero interest in putting men on rigid diets they’ll quit the first time they’ve got a wedding or a work trip. What I teach is how to eat for your goals in the middle of a normal, social, busy life, because that’s the only version that lasts. Real food, enough protein, sensible awareness, and the flexibility to actually live.

One habit makes all of this far easier: think a meal ahead when you know something big is coming. Got a heavy work dinner tonight, or a lunch you can’t control? Keep the day’s other meals simple and protein-heavy, and get a walk in. You’re not punishing yourself, you’re just balancing the books a little around an event you actually want to enjoy. That small bit of forethought means you can sit down to the meal fully present, order what you fancy, and not carry a shred of guilt, because you already made room for it. That’s the difference between a diet that runs your life and a way of eating that fits inside it.

If you’ve avoided getting started because you didn’t want to give up your life, good news, you don’t have to. Have a look at the coaching options here and let’s build a way of eating you can keep through every dinner, pint and holiday, while your body keeps changing anyway.
